Other Containers
The container specifications detailed in this section are the most common types of containers in service. However, there are many other variants which have been designed for shipping specific cargoes. Bulk containers carry dry cargo without the need for intermediate packaging. Foodstuffs such as wheat or rice or powdered or granulated chemicals are typical cargoes. Tank containers are used for shipping bulk liquids such as orange juice, milk or petroleum products.

Container lengths now include 13.6m (in Europe) 45ft, 48ft and 53ft (in North America). Units wider than standard allow for palletised cargo to be efficiently carried. Many containers are designed for specific cargoes. These include newsprint paper, bitumen and very corrosive or highly combustible material.

In a sense, containerisation has gone full circle. From its introduction 50 years ago, intermodalism produced designs, which became standardised across all modes of transport and in all countries. Today many operators and cargo owners prefer to build specific units to cater for their own requirements. In our detailed specifications we have featured the most common equipment types. Cargostore can supply any type of container to suite your particular requirement.
